How to Sell Items Safely on Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace
Why Sell Online? It Is Easier Than You Think
If you have items around the house that you no longer need, selling them online is a wonderful way to declutter and earn some extra money. In Canada, two of the most popular platforms are Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace. Both are free to use and reach millions of Canadian buyers. This guide will walk you through every step so you can sell with confidence and stay safe.
What You Will Need Before You Start
- A smartphone, tablet, or computer with internet access
- An email address to create your account
- Clear photos of the item you want to sell
- An idea of what price you would like to ask
Step 1: Choose Your Platform
Kijiji is a Canadian classified ads website owned by eBay. It is especially popular for furniture, cars, and household items. You can visit kijiji.ca on your browser or download the Kijiji app from the App Store or Google Play.
Facebook Marketplace is built right into the Facebook app. If you already have a Facebook account, you do not need to sign up for anything new. Just tap the marketplace icon at the bottom of your Facebook app.
Step 2: Create Your Listing
- Open Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace and tap Post Ad or Sell Something
- Select the category that best fits your item (for example, Furniture or Electronics)
- Write a clear title that describes exactly what you are selling, such as "Solid Oak Dining Table with 4 Chairs"
- Write an honest description. Include the condition, dimensions, brand, and any flaws. Being upfront builds trust.
- Set a fair price. You can check similar listings on Kijiji to see what others are charging.
- Upload at least 3 to 5 clear, well-lit photos from different angles.
- Choose your location so nearby buyers can find your listing.
- Tap Post to publish your listing.
Step 3: Communicate with Buyers Safely
When someone is interested, they will send you a message through the app. Here are important safety tips:
- Keep all communication inside the app. Do not give out your personal phone number or email address.
- Never accept cheques or money orders. These are common scam methods. Accept cash or an e-Transfer only.
- Watch for overpayment scams. If a buyer offers to pay more than your asking price and asks you to send back the difference, this is a scam. Walk away.
- Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it probably is. You are never obligated to sell to anyone.
Step 4: Meet the Buyer in Person
When it is time for the buyer to pick up the item, follow these safety guidelines:
- Meet in a public place such as a coffee shop parking lot, a mall, or a police station lobby. Many Canadian police stations have designated "safe trade" zones with cameras.
- Bring a friend or family member with you if possible.
- Do not invite strangers into your home unless you absolutely must (for large furniture), and always have someone else present.
- Meet during daylight hours when it is easier to see and feel safe.
Step 5: Complete the Sale
When the buyer arrives and inspects the item:
- Let them look at the item carefully. Answer any questions honestly.
- Agree on the payment method. Cash is simplest. For e-Transfer, confirm the money has arrived in your account before handing over the item.
- Once payment is confirmed, help the buyer load the item if needed.
- Delete or mark your listing as sold in the app.
