How to Send and Receive Email on Your iPad or Android Tablet

Why Use Email on Your Tablet?

Email is one of the easiest ways to stay in touch with family, friends, and businesses. A tablet gives you a larger screen than a phone, making it easier to read and type messages. Whether you have an iPad or an Android tablet, setting up email is straightforward.

Setting Up Email on an iPad

The iPad comes with a built-in Mail app that works with most email providers. Here is how to set it up:

  1. Open the Settings app (the grey gear icon)
  2. Scroll down and tap Mail
  3. Tap Accounts, then Add Account
  4. Choose your email provider (Google, Yahoo, Outlook, or tap Other for less common providers)
  5. Enter your email address and password
  6. Tap Next and wait for the iPad to verify your account
  7. Make sure Mail is turned on, then tap Save

Your emails will now appear in the Mail app. You will hear a notification sound when new mail arrives.

Setting Up Email on an Android Tablet

Android tablets typically come with a Gmail app. If you use Gmail, your account may already be set up. If not, or if you use a different email provider:

  1. Open the Gmail app on your tablet
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner
  3. Tap Add another account
  4. Choose your email provider (Google, Outlook, Yahoo, or Other)
  5. Enter your email address and password
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup

For non-Gmail accounts like Bell, Rogers, or Shaw, select Other and enter your email settings. Your internet provider can give you these details if needed.

How to Write and Send an Email

Once your email is set up, writing a message is simple:

  1. Open your email app
  2. Tap the New Message button (usually a pencil or plus icon in the bottom-right corner)
  3. In the To field, type the email address of the person you are writing to
  4. In the Subject field, write a short description of your message (for example, "Thanksgiving dinner plans")
  5. Tap the main text area and type your message
  6. When you are ready, tap Send (usually a paper airplane or arrow icon)

How to Reply to an Email

When someone sends you an email, you can reply easily:

  1. Open the email by tapping on it
  2. Tap the Reply button (usually a curved arrow pointing left)
  3. Type your response in the message area
  4. Tap Send

If you want to include everyone who received the original email, tap Reply All instead. Use this when replying to group conversations with family members.

How to Attach a Photo to an Email

Sending a photo by email is a wonderful way to share memories with family. Here is how:

  1. Start a new email or reply to an existing one
  2. Tap the attachment icon (usually a paperclip or a picture icon)
  3. Select Photo or Video (or Insert Photo on iPad)
  4. Browse your photo library and tap the photo you want to share
  5. Wait for the photo to attach, then tap Send

Tip: If the photo is very large, your email app may ask if you want to resize it. Choosing a medium size is usually best — it sends faster and looks good on the other end.

Tips for Managing Your Inbox

  • Delete emails you no longer need — Swipe left on an email and tap Trash to remove it
  • Watch out for phishing emails — If an email asks you to click a link and enter personal information, be cautious. When in doubt, call the company directly
  • Check your Spam or Junk folder occasionally — Sometimes legitimate emails end up there by mistake
  • Keep your inbox tidy — Try to check email once or twice a day rather than letting messages pile up

Email does not have to be complicated. With a little practice, you will be sending messages and photos to your loved ones with ease. Take your time, and do not be afraid to experiment — you cannot break anything by trying!
