How to Create a Strong Password
Your banking password should be:
- At least 12 characters long
- A mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols
- Different from passwords you use for email or social media
- Something you can remember but others can't guess
Example: Instead of "Password123", try something like "My$ecureBank2026!"
Tip: Write your password down on paper and keep it in a safe place (not stuck to your computer). It's okay to write it down — just don't share it with anyone.
What You Can Do With Online Banking
- Check your balance anytime without calling or visiting a branch
- Pay bills — set up payees like Hydro, Bell, Rogers, and pay with a few clicks
- Transfer money between your own accounts or send Interac e-Transfers to others
- View statements — no more paper statements cluttering your mailbox
- Set up alerts — get notified when your balance drops below a certain amount
Staying Safe While Banking Online
- Never log in to your bank from a public Wi-Fi network (like at a coffee shop)
- Always type the bank's website address directly — don't click links in emails
- Look for the lock icon and "https" in the address bar
- Log out when you're done — don't just close the browser
- If your bank offers two-step verification, turn it on — it adds an extra layer of protection
- Never give your password to anyone, even someone claiming to be from the bank
What If Something Goes Wrong?
If you notice a charge you didn't make, or think someone accessed your account:
- Call your bank immediately — the number is on the back of your debit card
- Change your password right away
- Canadian banks have zero-liability policies — if you report fraud promptly, you're protected
Start Small and Build Confidence
You don't have to do everything at once. Start by just checking your balance online. Once that feels comfortable, try paying a bill. Before you know it, you'll wonder how you ever managed without online banking.
