How to Watch Netflix and YouTube on Your Smart TV
Why Stream on Your Smart TV?
Gone are the days when you had only a few channels to choose from. With a smart TV, you can watch thousands of movies, TV shows, and videos whenever you want. Netflix offers a huge library of movies and series, and YouTube has everything from cooking shows to nature documentaries to exercise videos — all for free. If you have a smart TV and an internet connection, you already have everything you need.
What Is a Smart TV?
A smart TV is simply a television that connects to the internet. Most TVs sold in Canada in the last five years are smart TVs. You can tell if your TV is smart if it has:
- A home screen with app icons when you turn it on
- A Wi-Fi or network option in the settings menu
- Buttons on your remote for Netflix, YouTube, or an app store
If your TV is not smart, you can still stream by plugging in a small device like a Chromecast, Roku, or Amazon Fire Stick — they cost about $40 to $60 at Walmart Canada or Best Buy.
Step 1: Connect Your TV to the Internet
If your TV is not already connected to Wi-Fi, here is how:
- Press the Home or Settings button on your TV remote
- Look for "Network" or "Wi-Fi" in the menu
- Select your home Wi-Fi network from the list
- Type in your Wi-Fi password using the on-screen keyboard (this is the same password you use for your phone or computer)
- Wait a moment for the connection to be confirmed
If you have trouble typing with the remote, try plugging a USB keyboard into the TV — many smart TVs support this.
Step 2: Find and Open Netflix
- Press the Home button on your remote
- Look for the red N icon on your home screen
- If you see it, click on it using the OK or Enter button on your remote
- If you do not see it, go to your TV's App Store (it might be called "Samsung Apps," "LG Content Store," or just "Apps")
- Search for "Netflix" and select "Install" or "Download"
- Once installed, open the Netflix app
Step 3: Sign In to Netflix
If you already have a Netflix account:
- Open the Netflix app on your TV
- Select "Sign In"
- Type in your email address and password
- Press "Sign In" and you are ready to watch!
If you do not have a Netflix account yet:
- On your computer or tablet, go to netflix.com
- Click "Get Started" and choose a plan (the Basic plan starts at about $6 per month in Canada)
- Create your account with an email and password
- Then go back to your TV and sign in with those same details
Step 4: Find and Watch YouTube
YouTube is free and already installed on most smart TVs:
- Press the Home button on your remote
- Look for the YouTube icon (a red play button)
- Click on it to open the app
- Use the search icon (usually a magnifying glass) to find videos on any topic you like
Some great YouTube channels for Canadian seniors include:
- CBC News — daily Canadian news updates
- Rick Steves' Europe — travel inspiration from your living room
- Yoga with Adriene — gentle yoga and stretching for beginners
- Canadian Living — recipes and lifestyle tips
How to Browse and Search
On both Netflix and YouTube, you can browse by category or search for something specific:
- Browsing: Use the arrow buttons on your remote to scroll through rows of suggestions. Press OK or Enter to select a title.
- Searching: Select the magnifying glass icon, then type what you are looking for using the on-screen keyboard. For example, try typing "Canadian history" or "gentle exercise for seniors."
Troubleshooting Common Problems
- Video keeps pausing or buffering: This usually means your internet connection is slow. Try moving closer to your Wi-Fi router, or ask someone to help restart your modem.
- Netflix says "Unable to connect": Check that your TV is still connected to Wi-Fi. Go to Settings and verify your network connection.
- The sound is not working: Press the Volume Up button on your remote. Also check that you have not accidentally muted the TV.
- Apps are missing: Go to your TV's App Store and search for the app you need, then install it.
Streaming is one of the great pleasures of having a smart TV. Take your time exploring, and do not be afraid to try new shows or channels. There is a whole world of entertainment waiting for you!
