Why Shop Online?

Online shopping lets you browse thousands of products from the comfort of your home. Whether it is a cold January morning in Winnipeg or a rainy afternoon in Vancouver, you can shop without bundling up and heading to the store. Amazon Canada and Walmart Canada are two of the most popular and trusted online stores, and they deliver right to your door — often within a day or two.

But it is natural to feel a little nervous about entering your credit card online. This guide will show you exactly how to shop safely and confidently.

Step 1: Go to the Right Website

The most important safety step is making sure you are on the real website. Here is how:

  • Amazon Canada: Type amazon.ca directly into your browser's address bar — do not click links in emails
  • Walmart Canada: Type walmart.ca directly into your address bar

Always look for the padlock icon next to the website address in your browser. This means the connection is secure and encrypted. If you do not see the padlock, do not enter any personal information.

Step 2: Create an Account

Before you can shop, you need to create an account. Here is how for both stores:

  1. Go to the website (amazon.ca or walmart.ca)
  2. Click "Account" or "Sign In" at the top right of the page
  3. Click "Create Account" or "New Customer? Start Here"
  4. Enter your name, email address, and a password (make it strong — see our password manager guide!)
  5. Click "Create Account"

You will also need to enter your shipping address — this is where your items will be delivered.

Step 3: Add a Payment Method Safely

Both Amazon and Walmart accept credit cards, debit cards, and gift cards. Here is the safest way to pay:

  • Credit card (recommended): Most Canadian credit cards from TD, RBC, CIBC, Scotiabank, and BMO offer fraud protection. If someone makes an unauthorized charge, you are not responsible for it.
  • Prepaid gift card: If you are nervous about using your credit card online, buy a prepaid Visa or Mastercard gift card at your local grocery store or pharmacy. Load it with the amount you want to spend and use that instead.
  • Amazon gift card balance: You can add gift card funds to your Amazon account and use that balance to pay — no credit card needed for purchases.

Never pay for online purchases using wire transfers, email money transfers, or gift cards that someone on the phone asks you to buy. Legitimate stores will never ask you to pay that way.

Step 4: Search for Products

To find what you want to buy:

  1. Click the search bar at the top of the page
  2. Type what you are looking for — for example, "electric blanket" or "blood pressure monitor"
  3. Press Enter or click the search icon
  4. You will see a list of results with photos, prices, and ratings

Step 5: Check Reviews Before Buying

One of the best features of online shopping is that you can read what other customers think. Here is what to look for:

  • Star rating: Aim for products with 4 stars or higher out of 5
  • Number of ratings: A product with 4.5 stars and 2,000 ratings is more reliable than one with 5 stars and only 3 ratings
  • Read the reviews: Click on the star rating to read what people actually say. Look for reviews that mention quality, durability, and whether the item arrived on time
  • "Verified Purchase": On Amazon, look for reviews marked "Verified Purchase" — this means the person actually bought the item

Step 6: Place Your Order

When you are ready to buy:

  1. Click "Add to Cart" next to the item you want
  2. When you are done shopping, click the shopping cart icon at the top right
  3. Review your items and make sure everything looks correct
  4. Click "Proceed to Checkout"
  5. Confirm your shipping address and payment method
  6. Click "Place Your Order"

You will receive an email confirmation within minutes. Save this email — it has your order number in case you need to contact customer service.

Step 7: Track Your Delivery

Both Amazon and Walmart let you track your package:

  1. Go to "Your Orders" (Amazon) or "Order History" (Walmart)
  2. Find the order you want to track
  3. Click "Track Package" to see where your delivery is and when it will arrive

  • Pop-up ads that take you to unfamiliar websites — stick to amazon.ca and walmart.ca
  • Sellers asking you to pay outside the website — never send money directly to a seller; always pay through the checkout system

Returning Items

Both stores have generous return policies:

  • Amazon: Most items can be returned within 30 days. Go to "Your Orders," find the item, and click "Return or Replace Items." You can drop off returns at Canada Post or Purolator locations.
  • Walmart: Most items can be returned within 90 days. You can return online purchases to any Walmart store in Canada, or ship them back for free.
